Taking Action Will Change Your Life

Posted by onelife On July - 20 - 2009
I uploaded this video to YouReportSport.com It is Al Pacino in a movie making a speech at half time in a football match. He talks about life and sport being about ‘inches’. He says:

“Life and football, in each game the margin for error is so small. One half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us, they are in ever break of the game, every minute, every second and on this team we fight for that inch…. when we add up all those inches that is the difference between winning and losing”

How true is this? How many opportunities do we get each day to fight for that inch? To network with someone else, to write some fabulous content for our blog that will bring quality traffic, to inspire our staff to perform better or to go the extra mile for clients? The opportunities that life brings us are everywhere around us, all the time and if we just took those opportunities more would be presented to us.

Let me put it this way. We have a Raspberry bush in our garden, last year we waited to pick the berries because we thought we had to leave them until the bush was full. By the time we got around to picking them they had began to go soft and inedible.

A friend told us that if we picked the berries as they ripened, the plant would grow more to replace them. This year, everyday, we get about half a punnet of Raspberries from our bush.

I am here to tell you, my friend, that the opportunities that you are waiting for are already there, you just need to look for them. If you have found an opportunity or have an idea and you are waiting for the ‘right time’ that time is now. If you screw up that opportunity another one will replace it. If you wait too long that idea will become old and by the time you act on it, its time will have come and gone.

Tony Robbins uses a fabulous analogy in one of his programs. He asks his audience if anyone has ever thought of a gadget that could be a big seller. Most people put up their hand. He then asks if anyone has then seen a similar gadget in stores six months later and feels their idea has been ’stolen’. I know that has happened to me and pretty much all of the people at the seminar put up their hands for both questions.

The simple lesson from this is that we all have great ideas, the success of those ideas is not based on the quality of our ideas it is based on the quality of our actions. This is the only thing that separated you from the person who got the product on the shelf was action!.

I urge you therefore to take some type of action today that can take you towards your goals. Here are some ideas

1. If you don’t have one, set up a blog to help you clients.

2. If you have a blog download the Top Commentators plugin. Give some link love back and encourage people to comment, start a debate.

3. Send me your entreprenerial story, how you succeeded, how you came back from adversity and maybe I will feature and link it.

4. Ask a question, just one. Find someone you respect and ask something, sounds stupid? Do it anyway.

5. Start your business plan. If you don’t know where to start, act as if you did know where to start and start!

6. Tell someone you trust about your new idea, or the new ideas you have for expanding your business. Have a discussion, a brain storm. You will be amazed at how motivating this is.

7. Get you goals down on paper, date them, break them down and take one of the steps today.

Do any of these things today, because life is about inches. If you did one action per day and clawed an inch closer to your goals each day, what would all those inches add up to?

Another great post..I just stumbled across your blog today and I’m finding it hard to stay away.

I actually remember seeing that speech in “Any Given Sunday”…I think that was the name of the movie in question.

Great list of action steps. #7 is so important..however so few people take the time to actually document their goals. If only they new the power of doing so….:)

    hmmm…maybe I’ll read some more.

    Thanks

    Phil

  2. Thanks for your comment Phil. I agree, goals are very important to get sorted, in fact it’s crucial.

About Me

My name is David, I am very happily married and have one step son. We moved to Switzerland 4 years ago as we love the country, it is a hub of entrepreneurship, the people are fabulous and the skiing is not bad either!

This blog is about passing on some of the strategies I have learned in 20 years as an entrepreneur, from running a commodities operation producing $300mn per year of business to the challenges of owning a small hotel on a tiny Caribbean island and many businesses inbetween.

Others coaches are excellent at reading books and distilling the content for you, that is great if that is what you are looking for. I give you practical advice through my own successes and mistakes. I hope you find the blog useful.
