Ecademy.com Founder Thomas Power – Podcast

Posted by David@OneLifeNoFear On August - 19 - 2009
When looking for people to interview for the podcasts on OneLifeNoFear, we will always look to mix up the guest list with online and offline entrepreneurs to gain different insights into the strategies of people in all sectors of business. Todays’ guest, however, is a mixture of the two. Thomas Power, half the team of Thomas and Penny Power that founded Ecademy.com, joins us today to tell his story of how he went from physically introducing business people to each other to creating Ecademy.com.

What is Ecademy.com?

Ecademy_Global_200_180Founded in 1998, Ecademy is a social network for business people. Ecademy provides networking opportunities through a combination of online and offline events. You are able to set up a profile online to tell others about yourself and what you do, join a business club based on your expertise and interest, network through a private messaging system, expand your network by asking for introductions to others, search for friends and former colleagues, post your curriculum vitea for others to learn about you, pretty much everything you can do on other networks.

What I like about ecademy is that it is full of ‘real’ business people, as opposed to other networks where fake or one time profiles proliferate. Having only been a member for a few months I have already connected with some very interesting people. I think it is also a testament to how the network is run, and how it works, when I can ask a member to ask Thomas if I can interview him for a podcast and Thomas says ‘sure’ without thinking. I doubt I will have the same result when I try to get hold of CEO’s of other networks.

A Basic Ecademy membership is Free. An intermediate membership called PowerNetworker carries a nominal monthly charge; a top level BlackStar membership requires a serious monthly investment, but also includes exclusive tools, memberships in private clubs, exclusive events, and one-on-one meetings. Various levels of service can be viewed at Ecademy’s site.

Thomas and Penny built the business from nothing to its current level where the network is 400,000 members strong and, in a rare situation for social networks these days, it is profitable. Thomas discusses how the idea came about, what technology they used, how the network is developing and how best to use networks to move your business forward. We also discuss what tomorrow holds for networks and you may find some of Thomas’s thoughts on the future of social networks revealing.

About Me

My name is David, I am very happily married and have one step son. We moved to Switzerland 4 years ago as we love the country, it is a hub of entrepreneurship, the people are fabulous and the skiing is not bad either, and right now we are touring Asutralia.

This blog is about passing on some of the strategies I have learned in 20 years as an entrepreneur, from running a commodities operation producing $300mn per year of business to the challenges of owning a small hotel on a tiny Caribbean island and many businesses inbetween.

Others coaches are excellent at reading books and distilling the content for you, that is great if that is what you are looking for. I give you practical advice through my own successes and mistakes. I hope you find the blog useful.
