Earthquakes and Typhoons – Time to Step Up

Posted by David@OneLifeNoFear On October - 2 - 2009
I am sitting in a cafe in Nyon called the Hotel Real, who have been very kind and let me plug my laptop in. I am sitting here writing because my Internet connection at home has been cut off too early and I am marvelling at the fact that I can do this. Although the last weeks have been stressful, having to sort out the move and all, my thoughts drift to those in Asia that are suffering the after affects of earthquakes and typhons. These people are going through the worst of times, some have lost property, but others have lost family and friends.

So my post today is not about the move but, if you will indulge me, about the social responsibilities of entrepreneurs. As leaders in our communities we have a responsibility to our fellow man to use our skills, finances and intellect to do what we can to help our brothers and sisters when that help is needed.

So today I am going to ask a favour of anyone who reads this post, and this has been echoed around the web, please give something to help the guys out in those countries that are affected even if its just a dollar, whatever you can give all adds up in the grand scheme of things.

We all need balance

I was writing a post recently, which I have not published yet, about life balance, about how the struggle for success needs a counter-weight to make it all worthwhile. Those who reach the top of success mountain on their own very often find that they want to throw themselves off. Success without family, without giving as a purpose, is a hollow success. There is no greater reward in this world than using your talents for the greater good.

This may sound a little socialist but I could not be counted in that camp, I believe in the free markets and the freedom to achieve, but I also believe that with success, in any of it forms, comes a responsibiliy to use our success in a socially responsible way. Do I always live up to these ideals? No,sadly I don’t, I make mistakes like everybody else, I act selfishly like everybody else and my actiuons have hurt others in some circumstances, but when the chips are down I use those skills that I have been given to the betterment of society. I think we all have to believe that or where are we?

So forgive the post today, it is not motivational, inspirational, nor particularly focused on entrepreneurship per se, it is merely a plea to you to think of what you can do, be it link to this post, donate money, donate food, donate time or volunteer.

I have no idea where the best place to donate is but I looked at this page here of smiling Filipino kids and wondered how many of them have been affected by the recent tradegy….. my heart melted.

The web has provided us all with an opportunity in life, an opportunity to make money but also an opportunity to reach millions. Let’s use that power for good, let’s be proud of how we reacted, let’s come together in a few months time and discuss how the web created a movement for unbelieveable good.

Look into your hearts, delve into you Paypal account and give a little, anything.

Thanks.

About Me

My name is David, I am very happily married and have one step son. We moved to Switzerland 4 years ago as we love the country, it is a hub of entrepreneurship, the people are fabulous and the skiing is not bad either, and right now we are touring Asutralia.

This blog is about passing on some of the strategies I have learned in 20 years as an entrepreneur, from running a commodities operation producing $300mn per year of business to the challenges of owning a small hotel on a tiny Caribbean island and many businesses inbetween.

Others coaches are excellent at reading books and distilling the content for you, that is great if that is what you are looking for. I give you practical advice through my own successes and mistakes. I hope you find the blog useful.
